Historical
Chronicle of Sisters... By Choice, Inc.
Sisters…By
Choice (SBC) began in 1989 as the brainchild of Dr. Rogsbert F. Phillips.
A general surgeon specializing in beast cancer and breast health, Dr.
Phillips saw the need to increase knowledge and awareness of breast
cancer prevention and risks. In doing so would improve health care and
the availability of support services for her patients and her peers
within the health care delivery system.
SBC, consisting of women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families
from all walks of life, social, economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds,
emerged as a breast cancer support group. The group initially served
as a conduit to provide emotional support and counseling, facilitate
health screenings, and increase community awareness through education—in
its quest to fight a common enemy in breast cancer.
SBC is a multitalented group of breast cancer survivors who believe
that women should take charge and participate in their health care by
being knowledgeable and informed consumers; and are encouraged to give
back through participating in community service and actively promote
and support like organizations. Since its inception, SBC Breast Cancer
Support group, under the leadership and sponsorship of Dr. Phillips,
has organized the Annual Health Fair, providing free comprehensive health
screenings, emotional seminars, conducting Breast Self Exams (BSE),
and disseminating educational literature and resource materials. The
program ran for more than ten years and served a vast number of citizens
from the greater Atlanta and DeKalb areas.
SBC was incorporated and granted its 501(c)(3), non-profit status. It
has evolved into a model non-profit community service organization with
its primary mission to become an innovative leader in breast cancer
education and awareness, breast health, early detection, screenings,
and treatment for medically under served. In 2005, SBC underwent a major
reorganization, electing a talented and progressive a board of directors.
Strategically, SBC short term goals include 1) increase service to homeless
and under served women through programs to more women shelters; 2) growing
the organization to 100 SBC chapters within five years; 3) develop and
implement the “Breast Clinic on Wheels” project with potential
expansion to other states. The long range goals shall encompass continued
expansion of the:
- Annual 3-day Breast Cancer Awareness and Education Weekend
- SBC Homeless Project—provides medical service, free mammograms,
breast cancer screenings, and a variety of other services to the homeless
and under served
- Sponsorship and participation in Community Health Fairs and Screening
Programs
- Primary support network for breast cancer survivors and their families
